At Wayne State University, decisions about involvement in distance education have generally been made at the program level. Courses are offered both online and via interactive television in some disciplines. The need for central policies and support has been recognized and recommended in the following reports.
This committee was charged with making recommendations regarding ownership of intellectual property, work load, and compensation. Reference is made to the Report of the Provost’s Committee on Distance Learning from 1999.
This
report consists of a comprehensive list of 140 recommended
policies pertaining
to the use of distance education methodologies at Wayne State
University. It is based upon three key assumptions: 1) distance
education
is
a useful tool for building and maintaining quality programs, 2)
distance education is not appropriate for all students and programs in
the University, and 3) successful distance education requires
considerable planning and support. This report is the result of an examination
of the
experiences and policies of other Universities, pilot WSU programs, and
divergent opinions on distance education.
