Checklist for the Certificate of Teaching Development

Welcome to the Graduate Teaching Assistant Orientation! One of the major things you will be doing during your tenure in graduate school is furthering your development as a professional in your specific field. This orientation is a great opportunity to start working on your career. Whether you’re interested in adding to a teaching portfolio, resume, or curriculum vitae, we are offering a chance to do so! Those who successfully complete all of the required courses during the next two days will be awarded a personal Certificate of Teaching Development. So not only does this orientation help you to prepare for the wonderful challenges of being a GTA, it also serves as a beginning in advancing your professional skills.

In order to successfully complete this orientation and receive this certificate, you must attend all of the following sessions (a checklist is provided to help you track your progress):

              Diversity in the Classroom
              Ethical Issues in Teaching
Managing the Classroom: Problems and Opportunities
              Microteaching (NOT Microteaching Preparation)

In addition to these required sessions, you must attend at least four other sessions. These may NOT include the following:

  • Welcome (Wednesday, 9:00 – 9:30)
  • Microteaching Preparation (Wednesday, 4:00 – 4:30)
  • Graduate Employee Organizing Committee Presentation (Wednesday, 4:30 – 4:45)

In order to track your progress, write in your elective sessions below as you attend them. Please note, more than four spaces are provided as it is possible to attend more than four elective sessions (though only four are required to earn the certificate).

Your attendance at these sessions, as well as successful completion of the orientation, will be tracked by the attendance sheets used at each session. As a result, it is very important that you print your name clearly and legibly at all times. Because attendance will need to be verified, the certificates will be awarded after the Orientation at an open house in the Technology Resource Center. Have fun and good luck!
