HANDBOOK:
Understanding Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) at WSU: A Handbook. This handbook was written by the SET Committee in 2002 to provide background information on SETs at WSU today and their interpretation.

FORM STUDENTS’ COMPLETE:
WSU’s revised SET Form (November 2001): This is the SET form developed which is based on the ASSET Report. This is the current version and was first isued in the fall of 2001. It contains only slight modifications (for clarity) to the original form developed under the ASSET Report.

FEEDBACK FACULTY RECEIVE:
Student Evaluation of Teaching information is reported to faculty with two forms:

The first, WSU’s revised SET form (November 2001), provides a numerical score on each question. Questions 1, 2, and 24 are used for evaluation. Question 3 and 23 are for faculty use to improve teaching effectiveness. Questions “a” and “b” are interest questions and are used with 1, 2, and 24 for evaluation. Click here to see an example of the current form. (Note: This is the second iteration of the feedback form. It was slightly modified from the first version [Course Survey Summary for Individual Faculty Members - March 2001] based on feedback received on it.).

The second part of the SET feedback is the scatter plot. Each term there are scatter plots created that plot the summative student initial interest (questions “a” and “b”) in a course against the summative SET score received on that course from the students (1, 2, and 24). Use of the scatter plots allows faculty and administrators to evaluate the significance of the numerical SET rating. As you’ll note from the example scatter plots provided here that there is a strong positive correlation between the initial interest in a course and the faculty evaluation on the course. To see examples of scatter plots which would have accompanied the summary report click on the scatter plots listed here: university scatter plot, a department scatter plot, and a college scatter plot.

FEEDBACK DEPARTMENT CHAIRS RECEIVE:

  • A copy of the Summary Report for each faculty member in the department.
  • Scatter plots for the department, college, and university.
  • A listing of all faculty members in the department with the relevant evaluation and interest scores.

FEEDBACK COMMITTEES EVALUATING TEACHING RECEIVE:

  • The evaluation and summary scores.
  • The relevant plots.
