Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Sciences
This was the first presentation in our 2009-2010 series for Digital Humanities Collaboratory. Maria E. Gonzalez, curator of the online exhibit The Study of the Spanish-Speaking People of Texas, presented a collection of images commissioned by George I. Sanchez in 1949 for a socio-economic survey of four Mexican American communities in Texas. Taken by American photographer Russell Lee, the more than 900 images represent Mexican American families, migrant workers, professionals and business owners, community organizers and political actors. Gonzalez talked about the nature of digital storytelling, investigations of new audiences for the exhibit, and reasons for a 55-year delay in publication of the photographs.
